 
                The Unknown War is an outstanding 1978 documentary created through a unique collaboration between the Soviet Union and the United States. It is based on rare frontline footage shot by Soviet cameramen, much of which remained unseen by the public for decades.
Narration is provided by American actor Burt Lancaster, who later called the project “the most incredible film production of all time.” Script contributions came from Russia expert Harrison E. Salisbury, a former wartime correspondent in Moscow. Artistic supervision was led by American producer Isaac Kleiner together with Soviet filmmaker Roman Karmen, who researched extensive archival materials.
Convoys carrying weapons and ammunition from the U.S. and Britain arrived in the port of Murmansk. The Arctic route was extremely dangerous and was referred to by sailors as the “corridor of death.” German submarines and aircraft conducted constant attacks. One convoy, PQ-17, suffered catastrophic losses: only 13 out of 37 ships reached Murmansk. Despite this, shipments continued and proved vital for supplying the Red Army.
